Reflection

Our theme for the Third Sunday of Lent reminds us that we are transformed towards salvation as we open our hearts to Jesus to purify and renew our spirit. This week, God invites us to reflect on the deep thirst of the human heart.

In the Gospel, Jesus encounters the Samaritan woman at the well. She comes to draw water at a time when few people are around, possibly to avoid the judgment of others because of her past. Yet Jesus approaches her with compassion and truth. He begins a conversation that reveals both her thirst and the deeper thirst within her heart. What begins as a simple request for water becomes an encounter that changes her life.

The Samaritan woman represents many of us. We carry our own struggles, wounds, and areas of weakness. Often, we try to satisfy our inner thirst through temporary sources – comfort, recognition, success, or relationships. Yet these cannot fully satisfy the deepest longing of the human heart. Like the Israelites in the desert who complained of thirst, we too can become restless when we seek fulfillment apart from God.

Jesus offers something greater. He offers “living water,” the grace that comes from God Himself. This living water is the gift of the Holy Spirit that purifies our hearts and renews our spirit. When we open our hearts to Jesus, He does not condemn us. Instead, He reveals the truth about our lives and invites us into a new relationship with Him. His grace cleanses us, restores our dignity, and leads us toward salvation.

The Samaritan woman responded with openness. She listened to Jesus, allowed His words to touch her heart, and gradually recognized Him as the Messiah. Her transformation was evident. She left her water jar behind and went to the town to tell others about her encounter with Christ. Her personal experience became a testimony that led many people to believe in Jesus.

This Gospel reminds us that transformation begins when we allow Jesus to enter the hidden areas of our lives. Lent is a time to examine our hearts honestly before the Lord. Through prayer, repentance, and the sacraments, we allow Christ to purify what is wounded and renew what is weak within us. When we open ourselves to His grace, the living water begins to flow within us. For us as a covenant community, this renewal is not only for personal growth but also for mission. Just as the Samaritan woman became a witness to her people, we too are called to share the life we receive from Christ. When our hearts are renewed, our lives naturally become instruments through which others encounter God’s mercy and love.

Jesus assures us that the grace He gives is not temporary but life-giving and enduring. When we receive His living water, it becomes a source of spiritual life that continually renews us. Thus, we hold firmly to His promise: “…the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (Jn 4:14a)

Prayer

Father God, we come before You with hearts that thirst for Your presence. Purify us through the living water of Your grace. Renew our spirits and help us open our hearts fully to Jesus. May His Word transform our lives so that we may become witnesses of Your love and instruments of Your salvation. Amen.

Reflection Guide Questions
