June 28, 2026 (Cycle A, Year II) – 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Community Word: Jesus, the Living Bread, nourishes us to grow in a deeper relationship with Him and in the mission of the Church.
Theme: We are nourished by Jesus, the Living Bread, to give our utmost love and wholehearted commitment to Him.
Promise: “Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Mt 10:39)
Reflection
The readings for this Sunday invite us to reflect on the nature of authentic discipleship. To follow Jesus is not simply to admire Him, believe in Him, or seek His blessings. It is to love Him above all else and to respond wholeheartedly to His call. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks with remarkable clarity: our love for Him must take precedence over every other attachment. He is not diminishing the value of family relationships or human responsibilities. Rather, He teaches that when Christ occupies the first place in our hearts, every other relationship finds its proper order and deeper meaning.
As members of a covenant community, we understand that discipleship is a lifelong commitment. Our covenant with the Lord calls us to continually choose Him in the midst of competing priorities, personal ambitions, and worldly concerns. True love for Christ is expressed not merely through words or emotions but through faithful obedience, trust, and perseverance. It is seen in our willingness to surrender our preferences and embrace His will, even when doing so requires sacrifice.
The second reading reminds us that through Baptism we have been united with Christ in His death and resurrection. Our old way of life is meant to give way to a new life centered on God. This transformation is continually nourished and strengthened through the Holy Eucharist. Each time we receive Jesus, the Living Bread, we are drawn deeper into communion with Him and empowered to live as His disciples. The Eucharist is not only a gift to be received but also a mission to be lived. Having been nourished by Christ, we are sent forth to become instruments of His love, mercy, and compassion in the world.
In our daily lives, wholehearted commitment often takes the form of small but meaningful acts of self-giving. It may mean choosing forgiveness over resentment, service over comfort, generosity over self-interest, or fidelity over convenience. These choices may seem costly, yet they become opportunities to express our love for the Lord. When we place Christ first, we discover that the sacrifices we make for Him are transformed into blessings that deepen our faith and strengthen our witness.
As we continue our journey as disciples, let us remember that every act of surrender made for Christ is never wasted. The Lord Himself assures us that what appears to be loss in the eyes of the world becomes true gain in His Kingdom. As we are nourished by Jesus, the Living Bread, may we courageously offer our lives to Him in love and service, trusting in His promise: “Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Mt 10:39). In surrendering ourselves to Christ, we discover the fullness of life, joy, and purpose that only He can give.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for nourishing us with Your Word and with Jesus, the Living Bread. Teach us to love You above all things and to follow You with wholehearted commitment. Grant us the grace to surrender our plans, desires, and attachments so that Your will may be accomplished in our lives. Strengthen us to serve faithfully in our families, our community, and the mission of the Church. May every sacrifice we offer for Your sake bear fruit for Your glory and lead others closer to You. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
