Word Sharing Circle (WSC) Reflection Guide

Taken from August 10, 2025 (Cycle C, Year I) – 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

BUILDING TREASURES IN HEAVEN MEANS SPIRITUAL VIGILANCE AND FAITHFULNESS

Community Word: Living a life for God leads us to store up heavenly treasures.

Theme: We store up heavenly treasure when we are always vigilant and faithful stewards of Christ.

Promise: “Do not be afraid any longer…for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.” (Lk 12:32)

Reflection:

Every day, we make decisions, big and small, that reflect what we value most. The Gospel this Sunday reminds us that our hearts follow our treasure. Jesus says, “Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be” (Lk 12:34). These words make us reflect: Where is my heart truly anchored? If I am more eager to build comfort here on earth than to build character for eternity, then perhaps I am storing the wrong kind of treasure.

The journey toward eternal life demands a vigilant spirit and a faithful heart. Jesus frequently urges His disciples to “stay awake,” “be watchful,” and “remain faithful” as they await the coming of the Kingdom. These exhortations are invitations into a deeper relationship with God, one that is cultivated through a life of consistency, love, and purpose. Vigilance means being spiritually alert, discerning the signs of the times, and living in readiness for the return of the Lord. It is about not allowing the world’s distractions or the temptations of sin to lull us into spiritual slumber.

Vigilance also requires that we must be good stewards of God's gifts, recognizing that everything we have – our time, talents, relationships, and resources, has been entrusted to us. Like a caretaker managing someone else’s vineyard, we are called to cultivate, protect, and multiply what God has placed in our hands, not for selfish gain, but for His purposes. Vigilance guards us against complacency, while faithfulness grounds us in love and truth. They are the marks of a disciple who knows that life on earth is temporary, but what we do here echoes in eternity. When these two virtues come together, they shape a life prepared for eternity.

But it’s easy to get distracted, that is why Jesus tells us to be ready, not scared, but ready. “Gird your loins and light your lamps,” He says (Lk 12:35). This means we live each day with eternity in view, storing treasure not in the vaults of this world, but in the hearts we have touched, the love we have shared, and the truth we have spoken. The Lord gives us wisdom to manage well, courage to give freely, and a heart that longs to hear what Jesus would say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Jesus gives us this beautiful promise: “Do not be afraid any longer…for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom” (Lk 12:32). What a powerful assurance God is not a harsh master. He is a loving Father who wants to give us the fullness of life. But He also calls us to do our part, to live with faith, to be watchful, to stay true to His call.

So how do we live this out? Start with prayer; make space to listen to God daily. Serve with love, whether in your home, your workplace, or our community. Be honest in your work. Forgive those who have hurt you. Share with those in need. Stay hopeful when life is hard.

These may seem simple, but they are powerful ways of being faithful stewards. In the end, our goal is not just to live a “good life,” but a life that pleases God. A life that reflects His love. A life that stores up treasure in heaven. Let’s begin today. Let us live with integrity, upholding our commitments, serving others selflessly, and remaining true to the Gospel. Faithfulness is not just about avoiding sin, but about actively doing good and bearing fruit in season and out of season. Let’s be vigilant and faithful, because our Master is coming, and He brings with Him the joy of the Kingdom.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, You are the Master who entrusted me with gifts and time. Help me to be vigilant in spirit and faithful in service. May I never grow weary of doing good. Awaken in me the desire to store up treasure in heaven by loving You in all I do. And when You return, may You find me ready. Amen.

Reflection Question

1. In what areas of my life is God calling me to be more vigilant and faithful as I journey toward eternal life?

2. How can I start storing up “heavenly treasures” in my daily routines and relationships?
